Microstructural Modeling of Rate-dependent Behavior of Soft Soil

چکیده
ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to model the rate-dependent behavior of soft soil by means of a microstructural approach. A new microstructural elasto-viscoplastic model was developed, based on the granular mechanics approach and the overstress theory of Perzyna. The deformation of a representative volume of the material is generated by mobilizing particle contacts. Thus, the stress-strain relationship can be derived as an average of the mobilization on these local contact planes. The local behavior is assumed to follow a HertzMindlin’s elastic law, a Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion for shear sliding and a cone-shaped yield function for normal compression. Only a few triaxial tests, with a stage of isotropic consolidation followed with an undrained shearing up to failure at critical state, are required to calibrate the model parameters. Undrained triaxial tests on Lower Cromer Till are simulated by the proposed model. An investigation also considers the rate-dependent behavior. All test simulations, compared to experimental results, demonstrate the ability of the proposed model to reproduce accurately the rate-dependent behavior of soft soil.

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Modeling of Stone Column-Improved Soft Saturated Ground
Installing stone columns in the ground is an effective improvement technique to increase the load bearing capacity and reduce the consolidation settlement of the loose or weak cohesive soils. In addition to the increase in the bearing capacity and reduction in the settlement, stone columns can accelerate the dissipation rate of the excess pore water pressure generated by the surcharge, which ex...
متن کاملThe Effect of Lateral Loading Parameters on Monopile Behavior Based on Physical Modeling
Monopiles are the most common type of foundation for offshore wind turbines (OWT). Monopiles have been used in more than 80% of the offshore wind turbines. A monopile will be affected by millions of lateral load cycles during the operating period, which will cause its rotation and lateral deformation. The rotation and the deformation are dependent on the soil properties, monopile specification,...
متن کاملNumerical and physical modeling of soft soil slope stabilized with stone columns
There can be many reasons for engineers to place the footings near a slope such as leakage of suitable sites or architectural considerations. One of the approaches to increase the amount of bearing capacity, especially in soft soils, is adding stone columns to the soil. In this research, the behavior of a strip footing placed near a stone column reinforced clayey slope was investigated. For thi...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials
Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...
متن کاملComparison of Geotextile Layers Effects on Static and Dynamic behavior of Pavement
One of the methods for the improvement of soil against the tensile stresses is using the artificial supplements in soil such as metal belts or nets, polymer materials and natural fibers. Technically this method is called the reinforced of soil. When a pavement is located on soft soil, great deformations can occur as a result of the crossing of traffic load in superstructure layers of the body....
